Why a YouTube Video Has No Transcript, and How to Check First (2026)

A YouTube video has no transcript when YouTube holds no caption track for it, and YouTube Video Transcript's free details check lists a video's tracks, or an empty list, before you spend anything. Where does a YouTube transcript come from?

Every YouTube transcript is a caption track. The transcript panel on the watch page renders the video's caption tracks as a timed list, and a transcript downloader reads the same tracks and writes them to a file. There are two kinds. Manual captions are uploaded or typed by the creator, and YouTube labels them by language, such as English (United States). Automatic captions are generated by YouTube's speech recognition and labelled auto-generated. A video can have both, several manual languages and one automatic track, or neither. When it has neither, the panel is absent and the downloader has nothing to fetch, because the text was never produced.

Why does a video have no transcript?

Either the creator switched captions off, or YouTube never produced an automatic track. YouTube's Help page on automatic captions lists six reasons they may be missing or delayed, quoted here as written:

Live streams are their own case: automatic live captions are English only and end with the stream, after which YouTube generates fresh captions from the recording.

Two further cases look the same from the watch page and are not. A private, removed, or age-restricted video returns an error about the video rather than about captions; the track may exist, but it cannot be read without signing in as someone allowed to see it. And a video may have captions in a language you did not ask for, in which case the fetch fails naming the languages it does have.

How do you check a video's captions before spending anything?

Ask for the caption list, which is free, instead of asking for the transcript, which costs a credit only if it succeeds. Three ways, from the one that needs nothing installed to the one that fits a research conversation.

On YouTube, open the video on a desktop browser and look under the description for Show transcript. If the control is there, a track exists; the language selector in the panel lists which ones.

The third video is watchable, public, and eleven months old, and it has no track. Nothing in the listing of its channel would have shown that, because channel and playlist listings on YouTube carry no caption signal at all. Only the video itself knows, which is what the details call reads. It also answers a second question for free: a video with only an auto-generated track will read differently from one with manual captions, and the flag tells you which you are about to get.

Check for another language first, then decide whether the transcript is worth producing yourself; a downloader cannot make one appear.
